Ujamaa, Newals Estate Antigua W.I.
Designers: K. Edwards, C. Samuel
Ujamaa was the concept that formed the basis of Julius Nyerere's social and economic development policies in Tanzania. Ujamaa comes from the Swahili word for extended family.
Newals Estate is situated on the east coast of Antigua and possesses incredible views of the sparkling clear blue waters of the Atlantic Ocean.
The intention is to create a Ujamaa concept development at Newals Estate which will incorporate, sustainable green buildings & materials for residential land use and an economic engine driven by a commercial 20 acre farm with an eco-tourism theme utilizing sustainable agricultural practices. The compound will be wholly self reliant and provide its own utilities and services.
The parcels are subdivided accordingly:
Parcels range from 1850 - 1950 sq. ft for container plots.
No on-site parking. All pedestrian vehicular parking will be restricted to the Admin. Centre away from the farm and residences.
On-site transportation range from golf carts to rickshaws.
42 units comprising single bedroom/bathroom units.
30 units to be made available for stay over guests & time share clients.
12 units to be allocated for permanent on-site farm personnel.
The project comprises a farm, residential units, an AD plant, a grey water recycling plant and storehouses for produce. The farm will be agriculture and animal husbandry based.
